NEW VISA PROCEDURE !
For administrative purposes, e-mails from private individuals will only be answered if subject-lined EXACTLY as follows:
1. SURNAME and name (married ladies shall indicate their maiden names);
2. date of birth;
3. the words INDIVIDUAL REQUEST.
No other details are required in the subject line.
For example, a reply shall be obtained ONLY with a message bearing as subject: "SMITH KENDALL John Mortimer 27/09/1950 INDIVIDUAL REQUEST, while a message subject-lined as "Urgent help needed to book appointment - Marion Smith Kendall born in Balaclava" shall be ignored.
Any message(s) already sent using an incorrect format will not be processed and will have to be sent again, using the correct format and reattaching any of the original files.
Including your mobile number (ideally without voicemail) is a good idea and normally facilitates a speedier handling.
Moreover, only e-mails with specific requests will be answered. Details on generic topics can be found on this web site or on those of the Embassy of Italy in Canberra and Italy's Ministry for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
Information about cultural activities can be obtained through the Italian Cultural Institute, while commercial activities are publicized by the Italian Chamber of Commerce.
Failure to renew a passport may NEVER cause its bearer to lose Italian citizenship.
Obtaining a new passport is very easy, including BEFORE the expiration of the one currently held. It is indeed advisable to start the process with sufficient notice, while the previous passport is still valid.
Dual citizens (Australian-Italian) are strongly advised to schedule their passport appointments well in advance as their line is notably longer. Australian citizens may enter Italy on their Australian passports and during their stay obtain an Italian passport, including by mail, for a small additional fee. Holders of a codice fiscale may book their passport appointment in Italy by registering on https://www.passaportonline.poliziadistato.it/
For all applicants, either Italian-Australian or Italian only, a passport may be obtained on the spot and with no appointment on grounds of serious and documented urgency requiring to travel on an Italian passport, such as reasons of health of applicant or close relatives, sudden ceremonies, employment contracts, particular events to which the applicant has been invited. Short of any such documentation, applicants need to wait for their turns and constantly check our booking system for any cancellation that would bring their appointments forward.
Minors under the age of 12 may be issued a passport without individual appointment by joining the one booked by a family member.
Since 2003, Italian passports are valid for 10 years. There are no more renewals or extensions and a new passport is needed after the written expiry date.
When required, a passport may indeed be issued well before the expiry that of the previous one (eg, 12 months)
From 26th June 2012, minors entering or leaving the EU must hold individual passports or ID cards (even if they are still registered in their parents' passports, which retain validity nonetheless).
From 8th July 2014, the cost for issuing a passport is €116 with no exceptions and the annual fee is abolished.
EFTPOS payments are not allowed. All fees are only payable in AUD cash at the current exchange rate.
NO appointment is required for residents of Tasmania, provided their family file is updated and no BDM registration is in order.
